Tropical Backyard Escape Built for Real Life in Cary

This Cary backyard had great bones - mature trees, good square footage, solid privacy. What it was missing was a reason to actually go outside. No defined spaces, no flow, nothing that made you want to pull up a chair and stay a while. That's exactly the kind of blank slate we love working with.

We built this space around the idea that your backyard should feel like a destination. The flagstone patio pulls everything together - it flows from the covered outdoor living area out toward the lawn, with curved planting beds and stacked stone retaining walls breaking up the space in a way that feels natural, not forced. Nothing here looks like it was dropped in at random. Every element connects to the next.

The planting design is where the tropical feel really comes through. Palm trees anchored in river rock beds, ornamental grasses layered along the retaining walls, bamboo tucked into island planters cut right into the flagstone - it hits that resort feeling without going over the top. The stacked stone work on the walls and outdoor kitchen base ties the natural materials together in a way that feels cohesive and well-crafted.

The covered pavilion area gives this space real year-round usability. Stone-based columns, a wood ceiling, outdoor seating - it's a proper outdoor room, not just a covered spot to stand under when it rains. Paired with the fire pit area on the opposite end of the patio, this family now has multiple places to gather depending on the mood.
